Trinity College Dublin partners with Ripple to advance blockchain research, focusing on cryptocurrency, cybersecurity, and fintech innovation in Ireland.
Trinity College Dublin has entered into a partnership with Ripple’s University Blockchain Research Initiative (UBRI). It becomes the first Irish institution to join the program. This collaboration works towards enhancing blockchain technology and overcoming the main challenges in the crypto currency, crypto security, and the fintech sector.
Ripple, an organization known for supplying digital asset infrastructure to financial institutions, will fund the initiative with a two-year $200,000 (€194,531) grant. Trinity’s Adapt Research Ireland Centre will host this project, as Ripple joins the UBRI program, which is expanding worldwide and links universities to the blockchain ecosystem.
The Ripple Blockchain Collaboratory will be led by Professor Hitesh Tewari from Trinity’s School of Computer Science and Statistics. This initiative will focus on advancing blockchain research and innovation. On the other hand, the initiative will also serve as a basis for project-based learning for students and faculty. Moreover, the university expressed excitement at becoming the first Irish institution to be supported by Ripple’s UBRI program, sources said.
Ripple UBRI Initiative Positions Trinity College as a Blockchain Hub in Ireland
The efforts put into the research will study the role of emerging technologies in the financial and technology sectors, focusing on the Irish perspective. Decentralized social media platform development forms one of the main focus areas. This would be a platform without a central authority so that users would have a control over their data and privacy.
Trinity College will also operate an XPR Ledger (XPRL) validator, enabling direct participation in the global blockchain network. XRP is Ripple’s cryptocurrency, and relies on this distributed blockchain ledger to ensure that the system is secure.
Lauren Weymouth, who is Ripple’s Senior Director of University Partnerships, noted the significance of this collaboration. She said it would connect Trinity College to decentralized technology and foster innovation through fintech, cybersecurity and the blockchain solutions space.
The UBRI program is also set to raise engagement in the blockchain and fintech communities in Ireland. This will be done through different seminars, conferences, or workshop. In addition, this will help people to get awareness and knowledge of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.
Lastly, Ripple will fund Trinity students to participate in blockchain and fintech industry events around the world. As a result, this move will position Ireland as a hub for blockchain innovation.
