Sony Ventures Into Music NFTs with Soneium and Coop Records

-

  • Soneium’s debut NFT collection features an unreleased tune by NUU$HI.
  • Sony’s blockchain has approximately 245,000 active accounts since the mainnet debut.

Sony has just unveiled the world’s first-ever music NFT collection, which it expects to integrate into its Soneium blockchain. This would mark an important juncture towards the integration of blockchain technology in music. Coop Records partners with this music NFT collection as it embarks on making disruption in the classical methods of monetization and distribution by providing exclusive content through blockchain-based ownership.

Coop Records, an onchain record label already helped to initiate the migration for more than 600 tracks toward blockchain. Sonova, the official NFT market, hosts the NFT music library, allowing anyone to mint these NFTs for 0.000777 ETH until the end of the month. Users have already minted 644 copies from the total supply of 999,999.

Sony’s Soneium Launches Music NFTs

One of the standouts in the debut collection is a track from a 22-minute-unreleased track by NUU$HI, an emerging producer from Tokyo. This launch is among other NFTs set for launch through Sonova, which consequently positions Soneium as a hub for blockchain music content. Sony’s blockchain project is growing rapidly, with the mainnet launching in January 2025 and surpassing 245,000 active accounts.

Soneium began with a four-month testnet phase in August 2024. They then saw more than 14 million user accounts and processed transactions amounting to about 47 million. Nevertheless, with such growth, Sony does not declare any ideas on joining this medium with the broader business of its entertainment business. With ongoing NFT releases, the potential for blockchain-powered music distribution remains open-ended.

The launch of music NFTs on Soneium would be a turnaround of how people think about digital ownership of songs. Being in partnership with Coop Records and unveiling exclusive tracks Sony’s interest to apply blockchain technology in reshaping the music availability scenario. Whether Sony will expand the scope of Soneium within the entertainment sector remains uncertain. However, the company has set a high bar for future innovation in music distribution with its initial step.

Sony Music Group, which owns major labels such as Columbia and RCA, has not yet fully integrated Soneium into its core operations. However, the blockchain platform continues to push innovation in digital rights management and music distribution. As the industry evolves, Soneium is positioning itself as a key player in redefining how music is created, shared, and monetized in the Web3 era.
