Late Monday afternoon, the OpenAI Newsroom, a newly created account to share product and policy updates, posted about a non-existent OpenAI-branded blockchain token called “$OPENAI.”
The post claimed, “We’re very happy to announce $OPENAI: the token bridging the gap between AI and blockchain technology. All OpenAI users can claim a piece of $OPENAI’s initial supply. Holding $OPENAI will grant access to all of our future beta programs.” This announcement was misleading, as the $OPENAI token does not exist.
It also contained a link to a phishing site to copy the OpenAI website, but it used the wrong address, ‘token-openai.com’. The fake site had a conspicuous button that said “CLAIM $OPENAI”: people were encouraged to input their cryptocurrency addresses. This method supposedly would help the criminals obtain users’ login credentials and other personal data.
